Archer Daniels Midland Company And Lifeline Technologies
Announce License Agreement

Feb 5, 2001

Archer Daniels Midland Company and Lifeline Technologies announced today a licensing agreement for phytosterol technology. The proprietary technology has applications for expanded uses of phytosterols and phytostanols in foods and beverages. Phytosterols are natural plant extracts, which are currently used primarily in fat-based retail food products such as margarines and salad dressings. Studies have shown that phytosterols reduce cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.

This worldwide exclusive license for the use of the proprietary technology will provide for applications in a wide variety of foods, in particular, non-fat and low-fat foods. "This new technology will allow us to extend the benefits of heart-healthy phytosterols into

many new food applications, including beverages, yogurts, and low-fat foods," said Tony DeLio, president of ADM Nutraceutical and Protein Specialties Divisions. "It is another example of ADM's commitment to nutraceuticals and to feeding the world better."

Nutraceuticals, naturally occurring materials with health benefits, are used in functional foods and supplements. Functional foods have gained increased recognition in the rapidly growing nutrition and supplement markets. U.S. sales for functional foods including supplements reached $31 billion in 1999.

"We're looking forward to a long-lasting relationship with ADM, who we consider to be one of the premier food and beverage ingredient companies in the world," said Curtis A. Spilburg, Ph.D., President, Lifeline Technologies.

Lifeline Technologies, headquartered in Chesterfield, MO, is a biotechnology company focused on enhancing the health benefits of natural dietary components through novel formulation strategies. Lifeline is venture backed by Shoreline Venture Management of Palo Alto, CA.

ADM is engaged in the business of procuring, transporting, processing, and marketing agricultural products. It is one of the world's largest processors of oilseeds, corn, wheat, and cocoa, with over 23,000 employees worldwide, 368 processing plants and net sales for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2000 of $18.6 billion.
